High-Gain, Low-Noise Detection for Precision Optical Systems

Opto Diode Corporation, an ITW company and leading U.S. manufacturer of high-performance photodiodes, announces the release of its new Avalanche Photodiode (APD) Series. Designed for applications that demand extreme sensitivity, fast response, and stable operation, this new APD product line expands Opto Diode’s detection capabilities across the visible to shortwave infrared (SWIR) spectrum.

Engineered for Performance and Reliability

The new APD Series includes two silicon-based devices and one InGaAs model, each optimized for precision light detection.

• Silicon APDs (400–1100 nm) feature large 500 µm active areas for enhanced photon collection, with responsivity up to 0.55 A/W at 905 nm and exceptionally low dark current—down to 0.2 nA for stable operation in low-signal environments.

• The InGaAs APD (900–1700 nm) offers high responsivity of 1.0 A/W at 1550 nm, providing excellent performance for SWIR and telecom wavelengths.

All models are housed in hermetically sealed TO packages, ensuring long-term reliability under thermal, vibration, and radiation stress. With fast rise times (as low as 0.5 ns) and low capacitance, these detectors deliver clean, high-speed signal response in demanding conditions

Designed, Tested, and Manufactured In-House

Every APD in this new series is designed, fabricated, and characterized at Opto Diode’s fabrication facility in Camarillo, California. This vertical integration guarantees full control over quality, performance consistency, and traceability—key for mission-critical applications in defense, aerospace, and scientific research.

Opto Diode’s in-house testing and qualification ensure each APD meets strict electrical and optical performance standards, delivering the dependability engineers need for long-term deployment in real-world environments.
