Opto Diode, a division of ITW, designs and manufactures custom photodiodes, IR detectors, and infrared LEDs at its Camarillo, California facility — with in-house wafer fabrication and a dedicated high-reliability assembly area covering wavelengths from the EUV and UV through the mid-infrared. If a catalog part doesn’t match your requirement, most of what we build can be tailored to your specification.
What can be customized?
Active area & geometry
Custom active-area sizes and shapes, including circular, square, and rectangular formats, quadrant and multi-element layouts, gap widths, and center-hole configurations for beam-position and intensity monitoring.
Wavelength & filtering
Detectors optimized for your spectral band — from windowless EUV/soft x-ray designs to blue- and red-enhanced silicon and filtered options such as integrated thin-film filters and optical filter windows.
Packaging & assemblies
Hermetic TO-style packages, flat and sapphire windows, windowless construction, and complete optoelectronic assemblies and photonic modules built to your interface specification.
Cooling
Uncooled, one-stage, and two-stage thermoelectrically cooled configurations with integrated thermistors for closed-loop temperature control on infrared detectors.
Design, prototyping, and production — under one roof
In-house wafer fabrication supports quick prototyping and precision for military-grade products, and a dedicated Hi-Rel assembly facility builds advanced sensor units for silicon photodiodes, optics, and infrared LEDs — optimized for demanding applications in space, military, and medical fields. Because design, fabrication, assembly, and test all happen at one U.S. facility, prototype iterations stay fast and every manufacturing lot stays traceable through production.
Characterization and testing to your requirements
- Electrical characterization — responsivity from 250 nm to 1100 nm, with 13.5 nm calibration available upon request; shunt resistance and dark current; reverse breakdown voltage and response times.
- LED characterization — power output, radiant intensity, spectral bandwidth, and rise/fall times.
- Reliability — burn-in capacity and lifetime exposure testing.
- Mechanical inspection — measurement of mechanical attributes to a precision of 0.001″ (25 µm).
- Custom screening — MIL-Standard testing or screening to your detailed specification.
Quality, qualification, and traceability
- ISO 9001:2015 certified, and capable of meeting AS9100 standards.
- MIL-PRF-19500 qualification — screening and qualifying semiconductor devices to JANTX through JANS classes in a dedicated high-reliability assembly area.
- Lot traceability — every manufacturing lot is traceable down to individual components such as bond wires, adhesives, silicones, and epoxies, with comprehensive documentation maintained throughout manufacturing.
- ITAR registered — supporting defense and export-controlled programs.
Who we build custom detectors for
Opto Diode supplies custom photodetectors and emitters for space, military and defense, medical, semiconductor, and industrial programs — applications where a standard part’s active area, package, spectral response, or qualification level doesn’t fit. Examples across our standard families show the range: quadrant and multi-element AXUV detectors with custom geometries, filtered SXUV photodiodes for out-of-band rejection, and cooled PbSe detectors matched to specific gas-analysis bands.
